Half-term shows start with special puppetry theatre, Handa’s Surprise
Panto season may be over but panto-style fun for the family returns to Greenwich Theatre for half term week, starting on Sunday February 15, with the magical production of Handa's Surprise by the Little Angel Theatre company.
It will be the first of three shows across the week to cater for slightly different age groups.
The Little Angel Theatre, based in Islington, is one of the country's top puppetry theatres and Handa's Surprise – with eight shows over two days - blends physical theatre with puppetry and live music.
Handa's Surprise is followed by The Wind in the Willows, by the Immersion theatre company, and Les Petits' Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs.
"I think the shows reflect how companies want to come back to Greenwich", said James Haddrell, the theatre's Artistic and Executive Director, "We intended to limit numbers to 30 per performance but we have made it 50 because some of the performances are already selling out.
“Little Angel were here with We're Going on a Bear Hunt and we worked with the Les Petits to create Captain Flinn and took it to the Edinburgh Festival where we won the Primary Times Children's Choice award before transferring it to the South Bank last year. Now they are coming home to Greenwich.
"We also met Immersion Theatre Company at Edinburgh. It's another example of the way we form relationships with exciting young companies, bring their work to Greenwich, help them take it elsewhere – it is very much part of what we are all about.
"February half term is the first school holiday of the year after Christmas, and I think the excitement of Jack and the Beanstalk – which sold 26,000 tickets, 4,000 more than last year – is still in the air. Hopefully these shows will make the most of that."
