Starting Blocks Fundraiser Breaks Records

Olympic and Commonwealth Medals Winners Amongst Attendees

Olympic and Commonwealth medals winners were amongst the record number of guests and supporters attending the recent Greenwich Starting Blocks fundraising dinner.

Hosted by founding charity trustee Steve Sutherland the evening, which celebrated the charity’s many young athletes, saw Sky Sports presenter and former Olympic gymnast Jacquie Beltrao interview supported athletes about their sporting journeys.

Held at The O2’s super club Building Six the evening was attended by Judo star and Olympic and Commonwealth silver medal winner Gemma Gibbons, triple jumper and Commonwealth silver medal winner Tosin Oke, artistic Gymnast Ellis O’Reilly, boxer Jenna O’Reilly, swimmer, biathlete and triathlete Natasha Sinha, biathlete and middle distance runner Sabrina Sinha and saber fencer JJ Webb; all of whom have been helped by the charity.

Guests were treated to a behind the scenes insight to the sports promoting world by guest speaker and promoter Barry Hearn. Describing his many decades at the cutting edge of the business, he told the assembled crowd of his top ten lessons for success, imploring all to act with honesty and integrity.

Commenting on the record breaking evening Greenwich Starting Blocks Chair Peter Bundy said: “I would like to thank everyone who joined us for what was a fantastic evening and to every one of our trustees for their continued hard work.

"The support you have all shown this charity and the local young athletes whom we assist has been overwhelming and the money raised will help them on their sporting journey and the road to Rio in 2016.”

Singer-songwriter Daniel Pearce who most recently collaborated with chart toppers Dizzee Rascal and Sigma performed as guests arrived and treated all to a forty minute set at the end from his extensive repertoire.

The evening also saw the premiere of a Greenwich Starting Blocks promotional video aimed at showcasing young athletic talent and encouraging further support from across the local community for the charity.

Founded in 2007, Greenwich Starting Blocks helps support and develop young people gifted in a sporting discipline. To date over 140 athletes across the Royal Borough of Greenwich have benefited.
