Greenwich Farmer's Market Opens

Market will be open every Friday 10am to 3pm

Market enthusiasts flocked to Church for the grand opening of Greenwich Farmer's Market.

The market was officially opened by food writer Solange Berchemin at a ceremony attended by local traders and supporters of the market. Visitors tucked into some of the free treats of offer from the stalls, which include a number of traders from around Greenwich and the surrounding counties selling a variety of produce and will run every Friday.

The build-up to establishing the farmer's market had been in the making for some time after the previous market ceased trading.

"We secured the new site at the end of last year for this purpose", explained Tanya Ryder, Manager of Greenwich Farmer's Market, "It became apparent after talking to people over the course of December that people really missed the market that occupied the site where University of Greenwich Library now stands.

"We had We used the new site for Greenwich Christmas Trees for over 30 years and initially decided to use the space for The Greenwich Vintage Market. In just four weeks we have grown from five stalls the first weekend to 20 this coming weekend.

"The Farmers Market came about mainly from simply talking to people and asking them what they would like. The response to a suggestion of a fresh produce market where they could do all of their weekly shopping in the same place from a primary source was overwhelming.

"The response from the traders about the Farmer's Market was incredible and within just two weeks we had 20 traders booked in and had an opening date.

"My aim was to create a market where there was a great diverse range of produce but that nothing was replicated so that it would also work for our traders. This has worked out perfectly."
