On the town

A hand-picked choice of gems in Greenwich

Tucked away on lovely Crooms Hill, Greenwich Theatre has its roots in traditional English live entertainment. Over 150 years ago the Rose and Crown Music Hall stood on the site. Having survived a bomb through the auditorium roof during the war, the theatre continues to thrive, featuring everything from Genet to Shakespeare.

Greenwich Picturehouse, part of the small and uber-cool Picturehouse chain, is a cosy arts cinema on the High Street and is a world away from your average Odeon or Vue, though you’ll get all the Hollywood biggies here as well as independent productions. You get big, soft, semi-reclining seats, airy glass-fronted bar upstairs – even a quality tapas restaurant adjoining the building.

A dark and intimate little joint down steep steps at 9 Nevada Street, its doorway hidden at the side of the Spread Eagle, Oliver's Jazz Bar is one of Greenwich’s choicest hidden delights. With dark red décor, decent wines and great jazz, there’s the feel of an unsophisticated speakeasy about the place.

St Alfege, the Hawksmoor church dominating the centre of Greenwich is not just beautiful, it also features breathtaking classical and modern concerts. From Mozart to Paraguayan guitar, the quality is top class and the surroundings truly uplifting.
