Anyone for tennis? Greenwich’s refurbished courts

The £64,000 refurbishment was funded by Royal Parks, Will to Win, and London Marathon Trust

By Kristian Brunt-Seymour

It’s Game, Set and Match for tennis players in Greenwich after the community’s court have undergone a first major redevelopment for twelve years.

An inaugural game between staff from Greenwich Park and tennis providers, Will to Win was organized to celebrate the refurbishment of the six tennis courts in Greenwich Park funded by Royal Parks, Will to Win, and London Marathon Trust.

The four-week long refurbishment cost around £64,000 and included new nets, posts and straps, and improved court layout to maximise space. In spring, the tennis courts will be repainted, which will have the added bonus of improving grip. The courts also had improved drainage, to improve play during wet weather making them now playable all year.

The colour coating still needs to be done in April when the courts will be painted two tone green. This will give the added benefit of better grip. Colour painting cannot be done in cold weather. The new online booking system for the courts makes access easier for all. The meridian line passes straight through one of the courts. This will be marked in the run-off area up to the court baseline and labelled. We believe that these courts may be unique in the world as the only tennis courts where you can serve a ball in one hemisphere that is returned from another.

Greenwich Park Manager, Graham Dear said: “We gave as good as we got, but the staff from Will to Win are professional tennis coaches so they were always going to win!

“With the meridian line passing straight through one of the courts, this is probably one of the few places in the world where you can play across two hemispheres.”

Greenwich Park tennis centre is open to the public and requires no membership. Courts are free for under 16s, Monday-Friday, 3-6pm (walk on basis).
