Creating a buzz - drone in Old Royal Naval College

The event marks the start of the condition survey being undertaken by Paine and Stewart

At the end of January, something spectacular happened in the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College – a drone was flown around the magnificent space for the first time offering stunning views of Thornhill’s masterpiece.

This first time phenomena was to mark the start of the condition survey being undertaken by Paine and Stewart which will determine the conservation approach used to conserve the paintings.

The project will run right through until 2018 and for the first time in more than 60 years, conservators were able to examine closely the ceiling of the Lower Hall and the dome of the Vestibule, and carry out a range of scientific tests.

The drone footage made up part of the BBC’s package which was featured on the BBC National News on Thursday 29 January.
