Pints, points & prizes

All over Greenwich, pubs are putting locals to the test with a range of quizzes where you can win some rather good prizes – as well as the odd drink of course.

Ashburnham Arms

25 Ashburnham Grove

Landlord Denis Ryan devises a weekly general knowledge quiz on Tuesday evenings and a monthly music quiz on the first Tuesday of each month. Both start at 9pm and are free.

Denis modestly says his questions are ‘just taken from the internet’, but that doesn’t mean they’re a pushover or only about X Factor winners.

Admiral Hardy

7 College Approach (Greenwich Market)

The pub has plans to resurrect the popular quiz on Thursday nights. See for details.

The Pelton Arms

23-25 Pelton Road, just up from the river near the Cutty Sark Tavern.

Around a dozen teams usually contest the weekly general knowledge quiz, which takes place on Tuesdays at 9pm. Entry is £2 per person. Appropriately, in a pub famous for its live bands, there is a monthly music quiz on Thursdays. In both cases, the winner doesn’t take it all – the cash prizes are distributed among first and second place teams. See for details.

Cutty Sark Tavern

Ballast Quay

Booking is recommended for the Wednesday night general knowledge quiz (020 8858 3146) at this historic riverside pub. The evening kicks off at 8pm and there is a £2 entry fee. The prize is a very attractive £50 bar tab.

The Lost Hour

217-219 Greenwich High Road

Chris and Dougal's weekly quiz takes place every Thursday from 7pm with £1 entry per person. The quiz night has a youngish crowd and there are four rounds, with a prize of a pitcher or beer or cider for each, plus a chance to win the rollover cash pot, usually £50-£100, in a ‘Deal or No Deal’ showdown.

“It’s general knowledge, but we slip in a bit of everything, some funny stuff as well,” says Chris.

Plume of Feathers

19 Park Vista

General knowledge quiz set in the pub closest to the Meridian Line.

The quiz takes place twice a month on Wednesday at 8.30pm, with a £2 entry fee. Quizmaster David Dixon says the emphasis is not on “boring facts”.

“It ain't Mastermind but it's good fun and always packed, I make lots of efforts to Google-proof it,” he adds.

Rounds include film and TV plus 10 themed songs. There’s also Pot Luck, which varies from famous speeches to the perhaps more challenging ‘guess the flavour of the crisps’.

The first prize is £70-£80 plus a bottle of wine for best team name and another for the closest guess to David’s Random Stupid Fact of the Week.

Vanburgh Tavern

91 Colomb Street

Quizzes are on Mondays throughout the year at 8.30. Entry is £2 per person.

First prize is the entry pot (usually around £70+), second prize a meal voucher and third prize a bottle of wine.

Audience participation is key here, as players are encouraged to give category suggestions for the following week and quiz master Deke asks you to challenge him by creating your very own 10-question round. There is also a prize for best team name relating to a current news story.

Tables can be booked on 020 8305 1007.
