Greenwich Printmakers

A co-operative of dozens of artists who share the operation of a light, bright gallery housed in premises a few doors along from the Coach and Horses, has been in existence for over 30 years.

“We all have our own work in here and the commission pays the rent,” Angela Brooks, one of the members, explains. One member, Elaine Marshall has been there since its conception.

Visitors to the gallery need to understand that an artist’s print is not a reproduction. The word print can be confusing. Angela explains: “An artist’s print is hand produced by the artists in limited editions. It is the artist’s work, from conception to production. Some are one-offs and some editions are very small, so you are really buying something unique.”

Every two weeks, a section of the gallery - which is located in Greenwich Market - is devoted to a featured artist, and this spotlight “rotates through the membership”.

The work of Greenwich Printmakers is not confined to the gallery: they do outside exhibitions, too, such as the National Theatre and the Affordable Art Fair.

“We’d like to think we offer art at affordable prices,” Angela says, “and art that’s accessible.”

Prices range from £50 to about £450 “but it’s rare to find pictures in the upper price range,” she explains.
